There’s a lot of exciting stuff coming to you this week and next (including a screening of The Stuff at Slimeball Cinerama) - here are the highlights!
Bette Davis Weekend at the Senate - they will be screening 3 classic Bette Davis films including Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? this Friday and Saturday
It’s The Week of the Dude at Bowlero in Royal Oak, including a screening of The Big Lebowski tomorrow at 6pm
Cinema Detroit has secured a screening of No Other Land on Sun 3/9, which just won Best Documentary Feature at the Oscars, and does not have a US distributor. This might be one of your only chances to see this incredible film, which I saw last week at the Arab American Museum, it is not to be missed.
And for something completely different, TONIGHT UFO Bar is hosting the artist/archivist in residence for the Heidelberg Project to do a combined film/performance.
As for a follow up on my Oscar weekend - I scored 19/23 in my predictions, same as last year, but this time I got ALL of my short film predictions wrong. I think it would better to just pick them out of a hat next year.
Anora was the big winner of the night, with Sean Baker becoming the first person to win four Oscars in a single night (Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, and Editing - all of which he did himself). A big win for independent cinema, Baker spoke passionately about the power of seeing movies on the big screen, and the importance of independent theaters. Sound familiar?? If you haven’t seen his speech, you can watch it here.
Where did we fall in love with the movies? At the movie theater. - Sean Baker
One last thing, my friend Ryan Cady has been doing some incredible design work for the newsletter, check out four super cool posters at the very bottom of this post, you’ll be seeing them around town soon!
Support your local theaters, go out to a movie!
