The Weekly Watchlist, 6/17/26
Your weekly guide to cinema in Metro Detroit

Buongiorno movie fans,
It’s kind of weird sending out a newsletter with a bunch of cool events that I can’t go to - I’m leaving for Italy in a few hours - but I still want you to have a good week and find something to do! So here are this week’s highlights (and more on my trip in a sec):
I would definitely be going to the Scorsese double feature tonight at The Black Salt bar in Hamtramck featuring The Color of Money and personal favorite After Hours. They’re hosting clever double features all summer on Wednesdays - check out this post for the full schedule
Another great film I’ll be missing is Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf at the Michigan Theater on Sun (6/21). This is a movie I first watched during COVID and still think about on a weekly basis. Based on play by Edward Albee, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor are mesmerizing and traumatizing to watch in a vitriolic battle of wits over one of the most awkward dinner parties of all time
Lastly, don’t forget to check out our Outdoor Screenings section - this week we have the schedule listed for Ann Arbor Summerfest/Top of the Park which features a few short films from the Ann Arbor Film Festival followed by fan favorites such as Sleepless in Seattle and Sinners
Many of you may already know, but for new subscribers, I’ll be participating in a film restoration course at the Cineteca di Bologna starting this Saturday! I’m leaving today and will be back mid-July.
For two weeks I’ll attend lectures and screenings at Il Cinema Ritrovato film festival, and the next two weeks will be hands on experience in their film lab L’immagine Ritrovata. The program has over fifty participants from all over the world, and I’m one of two archivists selected from the US.
The newsletter will continue while I’m gone - one of my editors, Peter Moore, will be sending it out over the next four weeks. Thanks so much to my whole team - Peter (deputy editor), Greg Mushaka (editor in chief), and Kylee Weiss (executive research assistant) - for putting in so much extra work while I’m away.
Can’t wait to share my experience and to return to our Detroit cinema scene!
Support your local theaters, go out to a movie!
